Looking for the right words

Am writing about someone who stepped closer. Everyone else kept their distance. Let's say: their distance from a painting. But that one kid does not! Steps closer.

I would like to say:

"When only a nose’s length away, things looked different."

But is that an existing phrase in the English language?

"A nose's length"?
